In a competitive pageant that awarded more than $18,000 in scholarships to winners among its 13 contestants, it was Elizabeth Spencer of Fort Smith who took the crown of Miss UAFS 2018 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith’s scholarship pageant Feb. 24.

Underwood Learning Leadership as Cub Camp Director at UAFS
Tradition is important to Kaley Underwood. It’s part of the reason she decided to attend the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, following in the footsteps of her father and aunt, both of whom attended the university when it was Westark Community College. But Underwood isn’t only continuing traditions in her own family. She’s also helping continue traditions at UAFS by serving as the director of Cub Camp for 2018, a three-day camp for incoming UAFS freshmen hosted by upperclassmen that helps ease the transition from high school to college.
UAFS Chorale to Perform Concert Feb. 27
The Department of Music at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith will present a choral spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith, located at 116 North 12th St.
Robertson, UAFS Grow Local Economy through FEC
For Dave Robertson, there’s two ways of looking at economic development. “One is bringing in new business, but the other aspect of it is supporting existing businesses,” Robertson said. “Eighty to ninety percent of all US businesses are considered a family business. When you realize how significant that number is, and you look at the challenges that they face that are kind of unique, you can see where there’s an opportunity to support them and keep them strong.” Helping local family businesses address those challenges was a major reason Robertson took over as director of the Family Enterprise Center at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith nine years ago, a program that grows the economy of the greater Fort Smith region by helping local family businesses.
Twenty-Eight Area Youth to be Princesses/Princes at Miss UAFS
Twenty-eight local children will participate in the Miss UAFS Scholarship Pageant Feb. 24 through the Princess/Prince Program, a non-competitive program allowing children ages 5-10 to take part in pageant festivities.

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith campus will be closed on Friday, Jan. 6 due to inclement weather. During a campus closure, UAFS employees do not report to work. As a result of the campus closure, the Chamber of Commerce's First Friday breakfast scheduled for tomorrow morning has also been cancelled.

When Trang Ha moved to Fort Smith in 2012, she felt lost and alone. Completely blind and in a foreign country, Ha was surrounded by people speaking a language she didn’t understand. Four years later, Ha has found a home at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith as she enters her second year at the university, where she boasts a 4.0 grand point average thanks to a strong work ethic and a caring campus community.
