UAFS to Host African Night April 7
The African Students Association at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will host its fifth annual African Night at 6 p.m. April 7 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

UAFS to Host Southern Literary Festival March 30-April 1

May Receives Young Alumni Award from UAFS
14 years ago, Jeremy May was working as a waiter at a local restaurant without direction in his life, when he decided he wanted to better himself by attending the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. That decision paid dividends for May. In addition to graduating from UAFS, securing employment from ArcBest Corp., and flourishing as a local entrepreneur and community member, May was recently recognized by receiving the UAFS Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Award, given for the first time this year as part of the university’s homecoming celebrations.
Bui Wins Diligence to Victory Award from UAFS
It was 1975, and Lap Bui was crammed beside his family in a fishing boat drifting in the South China Sea several miles off the coast of Vietnam. Bui’s family of eight had loaded into the boat in an effort to escape the turmoil of the Vietnam War, and was near starvation after floating aimlessly for two weeks before being rescued by an American ship. Now, 42 years later and having found a better life in America, Bui was recognized for his accomplishments as a successful businessman, involved Fort Smith community member, and loving father and husband when he received the Diligence to Victory Award by the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s Alumni Association as part of the university’s homecoming festivities, an award recognizing notable UAFS alumni.
Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator to Speak at UAFS April 4
A curator with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will come to the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith for a lecture at 5 p.m. April 4 in the theatre of Windgate Art & Design, with a reception following at 6 p.m.

In the community leadership course at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, students are empowered to develop initiatives to better the Fort Smith community, from helping veterans to curbing drug use among high schoolers to enhancing quality-of-place amenities that will attract and retain young professionals. Before the crowning of this year’s Miss UAFS, last year’s winner Joni Fields-Adams said her successor was “in for the ride of a lifetime.” Katie Brown will be the one to take that ride. The Alma native was crowned Miss UAFS 2016 over 17 other contestants during the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s scholarship pageant March 12, which saw the awarding of more than $17,000 in scholarships to contestants.
