“One-Act Showcase” to be Performed April 27-29
Three nights of short theatrical productions will grace the stage at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith when the university’s theatre department will perform the One-Act Showcase at 7:30 p.m. April 27-29.

UAFS Education Students Recognized by KDP
Nine students in the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s School of Education have been inducted into the Alpha Beta Omega chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society during an initiation ceremony that also recognized senior members in the organization.
UAFS WATC Students Win Awards at SkillsUSA Championships
Students in the Western Arkansas Technical Center at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith won a total of 18 medals – two of them gold medals – in the 2017 Arkansas SkillsUSA Championships.
UAFS Student Places Fourth in Regional Robotics Competition
When University of Arkansas – Fort Smith student Justin Kazy of Van Buren traveled to the IEEE robotics competition in Denver, Colo., earlier this month, his goal was to place in the top 10. He easily surpassed that goal when he placed fourth at the competition out of 32 competing teams comprised of undergraduates from other universities in the region.
UAFS Students Win Awards at Radiography Conference
Radiography students at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith showcased their talents last week when they won a slew of awards during the Arkansas Society of Radiologic Technologist Conference held on the UAFS campus.
UAFS Theatre Program Wins State and Regional Awards
The University of Arkansas Fort Smith’s theatre program continued its stellar run at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival this year, notching four awards at the state and one at the regional level.
Corley Selected as 2017 JPH Fellow
University of Arkansas – Fort Smith student Kayley Corley of Booneville will have the opportunity to spend a summer in Washington, D.C. as part of a prestigious fellowship through the office of Congressman Steve Womack.
Area High School Students Showcase Artwork at UAFS
Thirty artworks by students from area high schools are currently on display at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith through April 28 as part of a high school art competition, with winners announced at a reception from 5-6 p.m. April 19.

Dr. Martin McDonell was working as a mental health counselor at a psychiatric hospital when he was first exposed to social workers and the good they did for the clients they served. As he said, “the light came on.” “I realized that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to impact people’s lives. I wanted to work with them, talk with them, and just help make change,” McDonell said. “I realized there was a job out there where I could help somebody overcome their problems – that was just very rewarding for me.” Now, 28 years later with a wealth of practical and educational experience under his belt, McDonell wants to inspire University of Arkansas – Fort Smith students in a similar way as head of the newly-created social work program at the university.

A hush falls over the crowd as they prepare to hear the name of this year’s Miss UAFS. The emcee calls out, “Katie Brown,” and her face lights up as she makes her way across the stage to be crowned, tears streaming down her face. While Brown won the title of Miss UAFS during the university’s scholarship pageant in March, her journey as a pageant contestant is far from over. This summer, she will compete against several other young women for the title of Miss Arkansas at the state’s pageant July 3-9, and has been preparing for the competition for the last three months.

Arely Hernandez set down the car – which she and a group of students constructed from miscellaneous items like rubber bands, CDs, and a mousetrap -- on the carpet of the Math-Science Building at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. The group of onlookers watched as she pulled the hammer back on the mousetrap then let go, watching as the car passed tape on the carpet marking previous cars’ distances. As the onlookers burst into applause, Hernandez couldn’t help but smile. She may only be in 6th grade, but organizers of the UAFS-Verizon STEM Camp for Girls held June 20-24 hope the camp will show her – along with the other 29 camp participants – that careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are not just for boys.
