Two UAFS Grads Commissioned as Second Lieutenants
Two University of Arkansas – Fort Smith graduates were honored with a ceremony May 12 signaling the end of their participation in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at UAFS and their commissioning as second lieutenants in the armed forces.

GHS, CHS Students Program Robot to Serve Coffee
Students at Greenwood High School and Charleston High School were able to showcase the knowledge they’ve gained through concurrent credit robotics courses from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith May 8 when they programmed a robot to serve coffee from a Keurig coffee maker.

For two days last weekend, University of Arkansas – Fort Smith students assumed the roles of Fort Smith residents “ignored by history” for the annual Tales of the Crypt event held April 29-30 at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith.
Kinkead Ave. to be Closed through UAFS May 15
A stretch of Kinkead Ave. running through the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith campus will be permanently closed to traffic May 15 in accordance with a decision made by the Fort Smith Board of Directors late last year.

When Trang Ha moved to Fort Smith in 2012, she felt lost and alone. Completely blind and in a foreign country, Ha was surrounded by people speaking a language she didn’t understand. Four years later, Ha has found a home at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith as she enters her second year at the university, where she boasts a 4.0 grand point average thanks to a strong work ethic and a caring campus community.

David Cooksey, a student veteran at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, faced a challenge when his van broke down, depriving him of transportation to commute to school when he starts classes this spring. Thanks to the Veterans Villages of America, Cooksey’s transportation problem has been solved.

Kim DeBar of Greenwood grew up dreaming of following in her father’s – and grandfather’s – footsteps.  Her grandfather served in the Army and was buried at the Fort Smith National Historic Site. Her father had forged a career in the military, retiring from the Navy as a senior chief petty officer and earning entry into the Chief’s Mess, a name given to a fraternity exclusive for master chief, senior chief, and chief petty officers in the Navy.
